Environmental Profile
The environmental status of this species within its geographical range has not been officially determined.
Distribution
Various species in the Ormosia genus are reported to occur in the Amazons, but may extend southward to São Paulo and northward to the West Indies, Central America and southern Mexico.
Product Sources
It is not known at present whether some material from this species is available from sustainably managed, salvaged, recycled, or other environmentally responsible sources.
Tree Data
Size is reported to vary with species, but the trees attain a height of up to 100 feet (30 m), with a trunk diameter of16 to 28 inches (40 to 70 cm).
Sapwood Color
The sapwood is yellowish in color and is not always distinct from the heartwood.
Heartwood Color
The heartwood is pinkish to reddish, mostly salmon colored, sometimes yellow brown, and somewhat streaked.
Grain
The grain is mostly irregular.
Texture
The texture varies from coarse to very coarse.
Luster
The wood is commonly of medium luster.
Odor
There is no distinctive odor or taste.
Ease of Drying
The woods air-season at a very slow rate.
Drying Defects
The timber may warp and check slightly to moderately.
T/R Ratio
2.06
This indicator is more meaningful if it is used together with other drying information and actual shrinkage data in the tangential and radial directions. (Refer to the Numerical Values window).
Natural Durability
The timbers are reported to be highly susceptible to attack by decay fungi. They are vulnerable to dry-wood termite attack. The sapwood is reported to be prone to attack by powder-post beetle.
Resistance to Impregnation
Incising is recommended in stock with little end-grain exposure. Both heartwood and sapwood are rated as moderately treatable.
Cutting Resistance
Timber produced by species in the genus are reported to be generally easy to saw.
Planing
The timbers are reported to be easy to work without difficulty in most operations, including planing, turning, moulding, boring, and mortising. Results are rated from fair to good. Worked surfaces tend to be fuzzy and difficult to finish.
Carving
Carved surfaces may be fuzzy, but the timber is reported to be generally easy to work.
Strength Properties
Bending strength in the air-dry condition (about 12 percent moisture content) is very high. Strength in compression parallel to grain is in the high range. Other species in this range include Teak, White oak, and Hard maple. Hardness is rated as medium. It resists denting and marring about as well as white oak or birch. The weight is high. The wood has high density.
